Neonatology

L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital manages the neonatal unit, dedicated to the care of newborns, particularly those requiring specialized medical attention from the very first moments of life.

Working closely with the maternity ward, our team ensures safe, continuous care from birth through the early stages of the newborn’s development.

The unit provides care for:

  • full-term newborns requiring medical monitoring
  • preterm infants and low-birth-weight newborns
  • high-risk situations or early neonatal complications
  • neonatal resuscitation and emergency care
  • monitoring of hospitalized newborns until their condition stabilizes

We pay particular attention to:

  • the quality and safety of neonatal care
  • continuous monitoring tailored to each child
  • support for breastfeeding
  • the involvement of mothers and families in care
  • the prevention of infections and complications

The department also incorporates the practice of Kangaroo Mother Care (the kangaroo method), which promotes skin-to-skin contact between the mother and the newborn. This method is recognized for improving clinical stability, strengthening the mother-child bond, and supporting breastfeeding, particularly among preterm and low-birth-weight newborns.

In 2025, the neonatology department provided more than 1,400 consultations and cared for 1,100 hospitalized newborns.

Our goal is to help reduce neonatal mortality and ensure that every newborn has the best possible chances of survival and development.
