Ozone Therapy

Ozone therapy is a complementary approach used in certain medical contexts to support patient care. At L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital, it is incorporated with caution and in accordance with medical protocols to help manage certain inflammatory, painful, or infectious conditions.

This technique uses a controlled mixture of oxygen and ozone, administered by trained professionals under safety conditions appropriate for a hospital setting.

Our goal is to offer patients accessible complementary therapeutic approaches, always combined with a rigorous clinical evaluation and personalized medical care.

Patient Safety and Quality Improvement

The Patient Safety Department at L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital is committed to promoting attentive, compassionate, and safe care for every patient and their family.

This department is dedicated to listening to patients, providing support in situations of difficulty, vulnerability, or confusion, and strengthening communication between families and healthcare teams.

It also participates in all quality and risk management initiatives implemented in accordance with recommendations and standards based on ARS procedures, with the aim of continuously improving the organization of care, hospital safety, and the quality of services provided.

Through cross-functional collaboration with all hospital departments, Patient Safety helps foster a culture of trust, transparency, and continuous improvement for the benefit of children and their families.

Participation in the national network dedicated to antibiotic resistance

In Benin, the fight against antibiotic resistance is structured around surveillance, research, and training, notably through the SARA project (Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance in Africa) and the establishment of national laboratories to detect antimicrobial resistance. This approach is part of the “One Health” initiative, in response to the alarming prevalence of resistant bacteria.

Hemophilia Treatment Center

Hemophilia care in Benin is provided by several hospitals, led by the CNHU-HKM in Cotonou, along with the CHUDs (Porto-Novo, Abomey, Parakou) and regional hospitals.

“L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital is part of the network of hemophilia care centers, contributing to the screening, monitoring, and support of children with bleeding disorders through an integrated care approach that is accessible to the most vulnerable populations.”

Sickle Cell Disease Care Program

At L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital, a sickle cell disease care program has been in development for three years to support children living with this genetic disorder, which is particularly widespread but still underdiagnosed in several regions of Benin.

This project is based on a fundamental principle: ensuring free access to care for children enrolled in the program, so that families’ financial difficulties do not hinder the continuity of treatment and medical follow-up.

School Health Program

At L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital, a school health pilot project was developed to study the feasibility and sustainability of a full-fledged school health service in the villages surrounding Sokponta. This project is inspired by recommendations from the World Health Organization and UNESCO, which emphasize the importance of school health as an essential tool for prevention and child protection.

The program is designed for public schools, from kindergarten through the first cycle of secondary school, with an initial implementation phase at the Akouegba school. The goal is to bring health services closer to children directly within their school environment to promote early detection and prevention.

Malnutrition Project Contract

For several years, the Nutrition Center at L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital has been developing a program to treat acute and chronic malnutrition among children in the Collines Department, with support from the Maria Bonino Foundation and Cooperativa Sociale Minerva.

The project provides care and treatment for malnourished children admitted to the hospital, offering medical, nutritional, and educational support. During their hospitalization, the children receive free specialized care as well as an appropriate therapeutic diet based on fortified foods with high nutritional value. These nutritional protocols were developed through international collaborations, notably with nutritionists from the University of Montreal, who regularly visit the hospital to conduct training sessions and exchange knowledge with local teams.

Oxygen Project and Biomedical Equipment Repair Shop

The Oxygen Project, developed at L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital, was born out of a collaboration with Engineers Without Borders Quebec, the École de Technologie Supérieure de Montréal, and the University of Ottawa, with the goal of improving access to oxygen therapy in several hospitals in Benin.

The program aims to improve the quality of care for patients requiring medical oxygen, particularly children, newborns, and patients experiencing respiratory emergencies.

Project Beyond Barriers

At L’Abbraccio Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with the Minerva Cooperative, a training and awareness-raising project dedicated to supporting children with disabilities will be developed between 2026 and 2029 in the two districts (Sokponta and Ouissi), where two Italian volunteers (a pediatrician and a physical therapist) have already conducted successful screening initiatives in 2024 and 2025. The project builds on these pilot programs and is aimed at healthcare professionals, parents, volunteers, and community leaders, with the goal of providing practical knowledge and basic skills to better support children living with disabilities and improve their daily quality of life.
